Will This 1956 Buick Special DRIVE 1,200 MILES Back Home? (P1)

Part 1 of 3: After an exhaustive 10-year search, I found my Late Fathers old 1956 Buick Special 2 door hardtop way down in Texas. Of course, I'm just going to jump in the car and attempt to drive it home 1,200 miles from Texas to Minnesota! Think I'll make it on?

I tried to help my dad as a kid by repainting a wall that he just painted a day before. He left his brush in a can of paint thinner. So I grabbed it just like dad did and began to paint. I got ripped limb from when dad got home, my own mother said that she thought he was going to kill me! My back ain't quite right but I still miss my dad! Tough love is one thing, but I probably would have gone ape shit if my kid was in the next room tearing up the dirt while I'm trying to paint just on bay over. Man, just cheers 🍻.

My Dad had one just like yours. I helped him rebuild the engine, when I was 6. Then he ran away from home in it. But I did get to see it every two weeks as he came back to load it up with his STUFF. But, I never saw the car again. But I got to see him a couple of times after that. Oh well, It all worked out. He named me SUE before He Left.

My grandmother drove one complete with what they called air conditioning here in Texas. We called it the tank. They traded it in on a new Chevy and totaled it the next day. Some drunk hit it running 80 mph. I still have glass in my side from that. Oh the memories.

I believe there was a Mercury sedan from that era that got around 20 mpg. It seems as though Nash was pretty efficient in that arena as well. I'm pretty sure yours was as low as it was due to the highly inefficient automatic transmission of that era. Even when they were in perfect condition, they slipped a good deal.

For the same amount of money blown on air fresheners and cheap disposable flashlights you could have gotten a bottle of Prestone radiator flush and ran it through the cooling system and drained it out at a do-it-yourself carwash, and then put in fresh coolant and been way ahead of the game.

You know that's a Dan Mathews car, right? I always thought it strange that the police cars on Highway Patrol (TV show) featured 2 door cars so I looked it up and true enough, Buick Specials were 2 door cars Buick made especially for interception and the police got a slew of them so they could catch the crooks. I think that car was a real rocketship in its day. Glad you got it back.

This reminds me of my father's 1957 olds, rocket 88. I drove that car by myself at 6 and a half yo. Main features then were: Automatic, pb, ps..we did'nt have air cond, ...lol ! Unfortunatly that ended bad for me, not because my driving it but because what happened a year or so later, ruined my youth and teenage years. I suddenly became emotionnal watching this piece. I feel like saying thanks for this episode and at the same time feeling stupid...but thanks anyways !

I’d take it back to the yellow and completely factory. It’s a beautiful car and story. I think most true car guys love the cars story and history as much as the car itself. I think we all have one of these cars in out lives. Mine a 68 as impala that I found years after I finished and had to sell it. Wasn’t able to get it at that time but would love to be able to find it now. Be appreciative that you were able to get it back in the family.

You could... commit the sacrilege of having it wrapped yellow and see how it suits you? I mean, it's cheaper than paint and it looks almost like paint, but without the "damage". You won't be attached to the color, you'll just see what it looks like.

A guy should save the Pittsburgh kit after every,,,,, adventure,,, job,,, flirt with disaster, "I don't know.". Then give it away to a subscriber. Or just give one to me. "I don't know" a guy can hope can't he? I'll be diplomatic about your decision. I bet you thought I was going to say, I'll be

Oh I wish I could get my hands on a 1951 Hudson Hornet. The one my Grandfather had was kinda turquoise. My father wrecked it while drunk in the mid 60's. Even young, I did appreciate the smoothness of that ride. As for the colour of your Buick, I'd bring it back to its former glory. Dare to stand out. I'm glad you were able to track it down. There is no price for sentimental values.

As I sit here thinking about my childhood,....a childhood filled with car shows, Super Chevy Sunday drag races, helping dad in the garage, Sunday rides in the 65 SS Chevelle. I couldnt help but to tear up hearing you talk about this story and your dad. I was adopted at 2 weeks old. I gave my poor parents the hardest time. I stopped having contact years back due to a drug addiction. They basically disowned me. I regret many things. I've been sober now for 5 years. Haven't talked to my parents in 7 years. It's all a sad and complicated thing. Point being,...never put anything before family. Especially drugs. It's time you'll never get back. Well done Derek.
Great video, check out Highway Patrol with Brodrick Crawford he drove the same car brand new! Keep up saving the old ones!
